President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announced the appointment of Senator Juan Edgardo "Sonny" Angara as the new Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd). The announcement was made during the 17th Cabinet Meeting held at Malacañang Palace, where the President confirmed that Senator Angara has accepted the position and is ready to take on this significant role.

Senator Angara brings to the Department of Education a wealth of experience and a robust legislative track record. First elected as the representative of Aurora Province in 2004, he served in that capacity until 2013 before being elected to the Senate. During his time in Congress, Angara has been known for his dedication to education and healthcare, authoring and sponsoring over 200 laws. Some of his notable legislative achievements include the Free College Law, the Universal Healthcare Act, and the Free Kindergarten Law.

Angara's commitment to education is evident in his legislative work, which aims to enhance educational opportunities and improve access to quality education for all Filipinos. His leadership in the Senate, particularly as the chair of the Committee on Finance, has also been instrumental in shaping policies to address national challenges, including the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The appointment of Angara is seen as a strategic move by President Marcos to strengthen the education sector, leveraging Angara's extensive experience and proven track record in public service. With his background in law and education, coupled with his hands-on approach to legislation, Angara is poised to make significant contributions to the DepEd and the broader educational landscape in the Philippines.

As Angara steps into his new role, stakeholders in the education sector are optimistic about the positive changes and reforms he will bring, ensuring that every Filipino child has access to quality education and the opportunity to build a better future.
